Anyone! Here in the Southern US there is a high risk for mold growth in buildings and homes with the humid climate. It is impossible to completely eliminate mold spores in the air outdoors, so at any time a growth may occur in your buildings or home. Individuals who are at high risk to showing severe symptoms to mold include small children, infants, elderly, patients suffering from low immune response, and people with pre-existing conditions.
Unfortunately for us, Mold is a very versatile and resilient fungi that only requires moisture, oxygen, and organic matter to consume as food. Because of this, Mold can grow on any carbon-based substance, including paper, wood, carpet, food, and even insulation. When water or humidity builds up in a building due to poor ventilation, mold will grow and can get out of control if not found quickly. Around Columbia the conditions are a perfect recipe for mold growth, especially during the spring and summer when the weather is warmer and humidity is increased.
Prevention is the easiest way to control mold growth. You can accomplish this by maintaining proper airflow through out at-risk buildings. And here in Columbia, all buildings are at high risk. Especially critical locations are those that are close to water or in low lands.
If you already have a mold problem, you must act quickly to get rid of the growth to limit long lasting damage. First find out where the mold is getting its water source and get rid of it. Sometimes leaky plumbing is the culprit, especially when the mold growth is on insulation hidden behind your drywall. If the mold is growing on a hard, non-porous surface like tile, you can wash it off. Use a detergent, rinse, and make sure it dries completely to prevent regrowth. If the material is porous, like drywall or carpet, the material must be removed entirely and replaced. It is nearly impossible to remove mold spores from the entire material.
